"A chair made like a big sheet of paper - a light and fragile material becomes stiff and solid."
——Christoph John, the chief designer of GU chair
From mao bamboo to bamboo fiber, then to bamboo paper, and finally to the bamboo paper chair, this is the evolution of the chair named "Gu."
In the vicinity of Yuhang, there are still some ancient papermaking villages where they use two-year-old tender mao bamboo to make paper for calligraphy and painting. This craft has a history of over a thousand years. The carefully selected mao bamboo is processed through dozens of steps to create paper pulp, which is the raw material for this chair.
Gu opens a door for bamboo paper, transitioning this traditional material from specialized tools for calligraphy and painting into the realm of everyday life. As a new version of the bamboo paper chair, the designer has employed traditional dyeing techniques to seamlessly integrate color into Gu, reflecting the inseparable relationship between paper and color.
