People have always demonstrated great imagination in using bamboo. By vertically cutting the thick bamboo stems, they can create strips or threads; horizontally, they become tubes or containers. When peeled layer by layer, bamboo reveals materials with various colors and lusters. These can then be dyed and woven, unlocking bamboo's endless possibilities.

The PINWU design team approached bamboo from multiple perspectives: its natural hues, the colors from bamboo ash glaze, the hazy image of distant bamboo forests, the fine fiber lines of bamboo stems up close, the shadowy movement of bamboo leaves in the wind, and the interplay of light, shadow, and texture in bamboo weaving. Building on this diverse inspiration and material research, the team began experimenting with handcrafted materials, refining the samples into designs. After multiple factory trials, they ultimately produced eight concept products. These were categorized into three major series—Texture (纹), Weaving (编), and Shadow (影)—with the entire process from impression to design to product documented in a video.

The dry bamboo strips, woven in a bidirectional or multidirectional pattern, create new textures and structures, providing rich inspiration for the weaving series products. The three-dimensional quality of woven bamboo evokes curiosity and the desire to touch, highlighting the unique charm of handmade bamboo weaving.

In creating the woven series of tiles, the team chose basic bidirectional and multidirectional weaving textures. Bamboo weaving patterns were impressed onto the clay body, and after firing, the tiles display the uneven beauty of bamboo weaving materials and the texture of bamboo strips. The irregular manual imprinting adds a handmade quality with a human touch to the tiles.

Through processes such as bamboo weaving mold production, computer stitching, precision carving, and glaze interpretation, two types of textured tiles were produced. These tiles can be paired together and enhance the relationship between people and space when used in interior design.

The inspiration for the Shadow Series products comes from the bamboo forest shrouded in mist after rain, where bamboo silhouettes become blurred by the water vapor, creating overlapping lines with a contemporary decorative feel. During the design process of the Shadow Series tiles, the team experimented with various digital processing techniques to capture the bamboo shadow imagery as accurately as possible. They also explored different gloss levels for the tiles. Ultimately, a matte finish with selectively applied subtle gloss was chosen, giving the tiles a sense of the dampness of the bamboo forest and creating a strong atmospheric effect when displayed in a space.

The Texture Series products are inspired by close observation of bamboo, with vertical fiber lines being a prominent feature of the material. The surface patterns of bamboo leaves, nodes, and cross-sections have been transformed into abstract geometric designs. These patterns are combined with embossed textures through manual engraving and screen printing, resulting in three modern bamboo texture tiles. The mixing of vertical patterns and textures allows for various tiling arrangements, adding rhythm and visual interest to large wall surfaces and enhancing the space’s dynamic feel.

The CESAN Bamboo Series concept tiles made their debut on June 30, 2021, at the opening ceremony of the Cézanne Impression Concept Store in Hangzhou's Red Star Macalline Supreme Mall. For this launch event, the team designed promotional visuals and display installations for the store, creating a new inspirational space for the CESAN Impression Concept Store centered around the theme of bamboo.

The design of the window display uses sound as a design cue, exploring the theme in each space through auditory elements. This is achieved either by interpreting visible rhythms through bamboo weaving materials or by experiencing the essence of bamboo through sound. As guests enter the event space or store, they can perceive the undulations of bamboo patterns and the murmurs of the bamboo forest through auditory experiences while receiving visual information.

The event's graphic design also incorporates the rhythm of music as a key design language. To emphasize this rhythmic quality, dynamic posters were created. Abstract patterns of bamboo weaving, bamboo shadows, and bamboo textures move and interweave in sync with the music's beat and cues. This design metaphorically represents the experience of moving through bamboo materials, blending auditory and visual sensations.
